Apr 10, 2020 | 12:28 PM

Fire investigators with both the RCMP and the Regional District of Central Kootenay Fire Services are examining the scene and the circumstances surrounding a fatal house fire in the West Kootenays.

On April 8, shortly after 5 a.m., Nelson RCMP were notified of a structure fire at a home in the 6100-block of Sykes Road in Balfour B.C.

Fire fighters of the Balfour Harrop Fire Department found human remains inside the home during a search of the structure following the blaze.

“Although an exact cause of the fire is not yet known, investigators are treating the blaze as suspicious in nature at this time,” stated Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey, spokesperson for the RCMP Southeast District.

“Efforts remain underway to confirm the identity of the individual whose remains were found inside the home.”

The RCMP Southeast District Major Crime Unit has assumed conduct of the police investigation, assisted by the Southeast District General Investigation Section, the RCMP Central Kootenay Forensic Identification Services and the Nelson RCMP.

The BC Coroners Service is also investigating.
