Work to start this month on arena upgrade

A Calgary company has been awarded the contract to upgrade the Pat Duke Memorial Arena in Lumby.

Cormac Projects will work with the Regional District of North Okanagan on the $3 million project for four new change rooms, improvements to existing change rooms, a viewing/warming area/entryway, and to reinforce the existing structure.

The arena dates back to 1967 and is named after a former mayor of the village.

It provides ice time for a variety of users, including minor hockey, figure skating, ringette and leisure ice uses.

Part of the funding came from Lumby winning $100,000 in the 2016 Kraft Hockeyville competition.

In March 2018, the Village of Lumby and RDNO were awarded $2,595,625 toward the project. There was also a grant from Telus, community fundraising totalling $75,000, and $230,000 provided by RDNO through the White Valley Parks, Recreation and Culture service.

On-site activity is expected to begin later this month.

“Work will follow all provincial recommendations and WorkSafeBC protocol for safe COVID-19 construction operations,” Tannis Nelson, manager of community services for RDNO, said. “Construction is classified as an essential service by the Government of British Columbia.”
