Apr 3, 2020 | 4:00 PM

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says there were 53 new COVID-19 cases in the province in the past day, bringing the total to 1,174.

In the Interior Health region there is five new positives, for a total of 126.

The number of fatalities grew by four to 35 in B.C.

There are 146 people in hospital and 64 are in intensive care, those numbers are less than Thursday.

And 641 patients, more than half, have fully recovered.

Dr. Henry said this is a challenging time for teens that don’t have the social interactions at school and some are preparing for grad. They need to be comfortable reaching out to a trusted adult to talk about anxieties and concerns. The Kids Help Phone is also a source at 1-800-688-6868 or text 686868.

She said we must be unwavering in keeping our firewall up in B.C. to protect families, elders, healthcare workers and others.

Dr. Henry reminded returning travelers to self isolate for 14 days – no exceptions — to keep the wall up, and neighbours should offer to help with things like groceries or walking the dog.

Health Minister Adrian Dix brought up the personal protective equipment issue, with regard to the order from President Trump to 3M, not to ship any masks to Canada. He said he was disappointed with the news and hopes there can be a solution as many of the raw materials needed are produced in Canada.

He said that just over 11-thousand elective surgeries have been cancelled so far due to the pandemic.

The next update is at noon Saturday, followed by 1:30 on Monday.
