Earthquake felt in Okanagan

Mar 31, 2020 | 8:51 PM

Some Okanagan residents felt things shaking around 5 p.m. today (March 31), while others noticed nothing.

Several calls came into the Vernon Matters newsroom from tremors being felt in the Vernon and Kelowna areas, and people wondering if it was an earthquake.

Turns out it was a shaker, one centered northeast of Meridian, near Boise, the largest in that state since 1983.

Former Kiss FM/Beach Radio newsman Tom Mark said on Twitter his house in Okanagan Landing shook “for about 20 seconds.”

“Haven’t felt anything like this since Vancouver,” said Mark.

Bev Bos, who lives on 20th Street in Vernon, noticed an ornament moving.

“I have a sun-catcher hanging in my window and it started shaking, and I’m thinking ‘What’s going on?’ And all of a sudden I could feel myself moving,” Bos told Vernon Matters.

The quake was also felt in Penticton and Washington state.

Officials say the earthquake occurred at 4:52 p.m.

The shaker registered 6.5 on the Richter scale.
