‘Together We Can Do It’ campaign reaches Okanagan

You may hear people cheering in your neighborhood around 7 p.m. nightly for the next while.

If you do, it will be a local show of support for the #TogetherWeCanDoIt and #Cheer4HealthWorkers campaign in the Okanagan.

The worldwide movement to show support for health care and essential workers during the Covid-19 pandemic was forwarded in Canada by the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO).

Earlier this week, the RNAO invited Ontarians to show their support in honour of the heroes keeping us safe, while keeping in mind social distancing.

“Step out onto your porch, balcony, or open a window and make some noise. Take a short video of yourself banging some pots and pans, singing a song, applauding, or honking your horn, and share it on social media,” said Dr. Doris Grinspun, RNAO’s CEO.

The shows-of-support have been held each night since March 19, with an aim of continuing until the COVID-19 fight is over.

“Tell your family, friends and neighbours to get involved,” said the organizers. “Post your cheering-up activity on social media using the hashtags #TogetherWeCanDoIt and #Cheer4HealthWorkers.”

The movement started Friday night at 7 p.m. in Vancouver, and North Okanagan residents have contacted Vernon Matters saying they too will be taking part.

“Why can’t we do that here? It’s such a simple thing. These people [health care/essential workers] are putting their health and their families’ heath in jeopardy. The least we can do is show we appreciate what they’re doing,” said a local resident.

At 7 p.m. everyone is encouraged to step outside their homes and make some noise as a very public and loud display of appreciation to our hard-working health-care professionals and essential workers.
