The provincial health officer had some sobering news about the COVID-19 coronavirus in B.C. today.

Dr. Bonnie Henry announced that 3 more people had died – all of them were residents at the Lynn Valley Care Centre in North Vancouver.

She also announced that there were 30 additional cases in the province in the last 2 days, bring the total since the outbreak to 103.

There are new cases in Fraser, Vancouver, Coastal and Interior Health regions, but a specific number wasn’t given.

Six people in B.C. are being treated in hospital, while the rest are self-isolating.

Dr. Henry announced that all casinos in the province will be closed for the time being and all gatherings of more than 50 people are banned.

Health Minister Adrian Dix is telling visitors from the United States not to come to B.C. out of safety, even though the prime minister said the border was still open to Americans.

B.C. is not closing the border at this time.

He added that B.C. is cancelling thousands of elective surgery which should free up staff to help critical care needs in hospitals.

The province is also moving to acquire more long-term care beds to free up acute care beds.

Pharmacists are being directed to refill prescriptions without a note from doctors to free up doctors.

There is also no need for sick notes.

Dix is also asking any retired or military health care professionals to get in touch with the Health Ministry.

As for schools, the minister said there is expected to be more information on that tomorrow at the 3 p.m. briefing.
