Pool fees increasing due to new lifeguard requirements

Feb 24, 2020 | 3:56 PM

Residents will have to splash out more cash to swim in the local pool.

Vernon council has reluctantly approved a four per cent increase in fees at the Aquatic Centre to pay for more lifeguards, due to new safety requirements.

Council also grumbled over the refusal of neighbouring communities to help bear the added costs, leading to the fee hike.

Pool hours will also be reduced to help with the added cost.

“I think it is unacceptable to reduce the hours,” Coun. Scott Anderson, adding “Vernon’s partners are not ponying up.”

The changes also mean an end to the toonie swim which Coun. Dalvir Nahal said “will impact people who can’t afford to put their kids in hockey” and other expensive sports.

Coun. Brian Quiring said the increase will increase the cost to $6.55 per swim for adults.

The motion passed with Mayor Victor Cumming, and councillors Kelly Fehr, Nahal and Quiring in favour.

Councillors Anderson and Akbal Mund were opposed and Kari Gares was not present.

A revised bylaw will be presented to council before the fee hike takes place, Quiring said.
