More lifeguards needed for aquatic centre

Feb 24, 2020 | 5:15 AM

The need for more lifeguards at the Vernon Aquatic Centre could mean an increase in fees and reduced opening times.

A change in guarding ratio standards by the BC and Yukon Lifesaving Society for when there are more than 80 patrons, means an extra 1,300 hours of guarding is needed, costing about $43,000.

Recreation management is recommended city council hike aquatic admission and program fees four per cent and reduce and closing earlier on weekend nights to cover the increase.

That would generate about $20,000

Director of Recreation Services Doug Ross says the plan is to close the pool 30 minutes earlier Monday to Thursday nights and one hour earlier Fridays for the rest of the year as well as eliminating the afternoon swim on weekends during the summer for a savings of $23,000.

The reductions in the summer would mean an end to the Toonie Swim, a low cost opportunity for the financially disadvantaged to use the facility.

“While this is extremely unfortunate, individuals identified as financially disadvantaged through our Affordable Access Pass program can receive a 75 per cent discount when attending the normal public swim times,” said Ross.
