Warriors take second straight from Vipers to end regular season

Feb 22, 2020 | 10:03 PM

It was a dramatic end to the regular season.

Ryan Upson scored the winner in a shootout as the West Kelowna Warriors edged the Vernon Vipers 6-5 at Royal Lepage Place Saturday.

The Vipers took a 5-4 lead on Dawson Holt’s 23rd goal of the season with five minutes left in the third period, only to see Deegan Mofford tie it for West Kelowna at 18:13.

Ben Helgeson led the Vipers with three goals.

The single point, coupled with the Wenatchee Wild’s 4-3 overtime loss to the Penticton Vees leaves the Vipers in 4th place, one point back of the Wild.

Salmon Arm is one point back of Vernon in fifth and can overtake Vernon with a win over Merritt Sunday afternoon at the Shaw Centre.

“We gave up 12 goals in two games. The disappointing part is we had control of the game and our decisions continue to hurt us. It’s just bizarre decisions. It’s pretty frustrating some of things we decide to do with the puck,” said Vipers coach Jason Mckee after the game.

The Vipers will know after the Salmon Arm-Merritt game who they will play in the first round of the playoffs.

John Evans scored three goals including an empty-netter with 23 seconds left to lift the West Kelowna Warriors over the Vernon Vipers 6-4 Friday night.

The good news for Vernon is that both Wenatchee and Salmon Arm also lost their games, keeping the Wild in third place with 64 points, one ahead of the fourth place Vipers and fifth place Silverbacks.

Jackson Caller led the Vipers in points with two assists before a crowd of 2,535 at Kal Tire Place.

“I’m disappointed,” said Vipers head coach Jason McKee who was a man of few words on the post game show with Beach Radio’s Graham Turnbull. “You’ve got to defend in playoff hockey, and you’ve got to have discipline, and we had none of that.”

The Vipers will close out the regular season in West Kelowna against the Warriors Saturday night at 6 p.m., a game you can hear on 1075 Beach Radio.
