UPDATE: 49th Coca Cola tournament wraps up: Vernon wins final game; South Ok wins title

It was a big finish for the Vernon Watkin Motors Mustangs.

The host team at the 49th annual Coca Cola Classic Pee Wee hockey tournament saw their offence explode in an 18-4 win over the Merritt Centennials in the D event Final Sunday morning at Kal Tire Place North.

Oliver Murray scored five goals with one assist for Vernon, who went 1 and 4 in the tournament, while Hudson Kibblewhite scored four goals and added five assists.

Caden Oliver, Ollie Reid and Hudson Restiaux each had two goal games for the Mustangs who suffered a couple of one-goal losses in the event.

Cayden Bergstrom had a goal and one assist for the Centennials. The crowd of a several hundred gave the Merritt team a big cheer at the end after they had only 11 skaters and one goalie for the game.

South Okanagan won the A event championship, beating South Delta Storm 8-2.

The team that travelled the farthest, the Yellowknife Wolfpack, won the B event 5-3 over the Coquitlam Chiefs.

Kamloops Blazers edged the Port Moody Panthers 5-4 in overtime to win the C event.

Their comeback fell just short.

The Vernon Watkin Motors Mustangs lost 5-4 to the Port Moody Panthers in playoff action Saturday morning at the 49th annual Coca Cola Classic Pee Wee Hockey Tournament at Kal Tire Place North.

Port Moody was up 4-0 at one point in the second before Vernon mounted a comeback to get as close as 4-3 in the third.

Tyson Moss scored two goals for Port Moody including the winner.

Hudson Kibblewhite netted two goals and two assists for Vernon, with Ollie Reid adding a goal and one helper, and Oliver Murray picking up the other goal.

The Mustangs fell to 0-4 in the eight-team tournament, and will play the Merritt Centennials in the D Final Sunday morning at 9 a.m.

The A Final championship game will be at 4:30 p.m. Sunday with South Delta against South Okanagan.

Yellowknife and Coquitlam will play in the B Final at 2, and Kamloops and Port Moody will battle in the C Final at 11:30 a.m.

It’s day two of the 49th annual Coca Cola Classic Pee Wee Hockey tournament at Kal Tire Place North.

The host Vernon Watkin Motors Mustangs take on the Kamloops Blazers at 5 p.m. in a battle of 0-2 teams.

Vernon fell 8-4 to the Yellowknife Wolfpack Thursday evening.

Hudson Kibblewhite scored 2 goals and added 2 assists for Vernon, with single goals from Ollie Reid and Caden Oliver.

Hudson Kibblewhite scored two goals for Vernon, with a single from Evan Kashuba.

Vernon, under head coach Ed Patterson, plays again at 5:45 p.m. against the Yellowknife Wolfpack, right after the opening ceremony at 5:30 p.m.

The tournament for 11 and 12 year old players, continues until Sunday at Kal Tire Place North.

Other teams are the Kamloops Blazers, Coquitlam Chiefs, Merritt Centennials, Port Moody Panthers and South Okanagan.
