Safeway site: ‘not a public parking lot’

Jan 23, 2020 | 11:42 AM

Ever since Safeway closed its downtown store last month, the store’s parking lot seems to have become a free public parking lot for downtown users, with a number of vehicles parked there most days.

However, the manager of the Safeway Pharmacy, which is operating in a temporary unit on the south side of the lot, is reminding people through the Downtown Vernon Association (DVA), the lot is only meant for Safeway Pharmacy customers.

The DVA says Impark is monitoring the site and will ticket anyone that parks and leaves the lot.

“Please remind your customers and staff to refrain from parking in this lot so that they don’t end up with a ticket,” Dina Mostat, director of member services with the DVA, said in an email to members.

The Safeway grocery store on 30th Avenue, owned by Sobeys, was open for 54 years. The company shut down the location in December and soon it will be converted into a new FreshCo, with an opening scheduled for next spring.
