Snakes snare win over SBacks

The Vernon Vipers sent their fans home happy with a 5-4 win in overtime over the Salmon Arm Silverbacks in a Sunday matinee.

Cam MacDonald’s 14th goal of the season 4:50 into the first OT won it for Vernon before a crowd of 1,783 at Kal Tire Place.

William Poirier, a product of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield Quebec, was the offensive star of the game with a hat trick for the SBacks who fell two points back of the Vipers in the race for third place in the Interior Division.

Ben Sanderson, Jackson Caller, JoJo Tanaka-Campbell and Landon Fuller rounded out the Vernon scoring as Reilly Herbst got the win in net.

The game featured a second period scrap with Brett Fudger of the Snakes taking on Jarrod Semchuk.

The Vipers next visit West Kelowna Jan, 24 before hosting the Warriors the night after.

Losing trip to Trail for Vipers (Jan.17)

The Vernon Vipers were not able to stop the BC Hockey League’s leading scorer Friday night.

Kent Johnson scored two goals and added one assist to power the Trail Smoke Eaters to a 5-1 win over the Vipers before 2,072 fans at the Cominco Arena.

Johnson, a 17-year-old centre from Port Moody B.C., now has 33 goals and 50 assists for 83 points, 28 more points than the second highest scorer, his teammate Owen Ozar.

Landon Fuller got the lone goal for Vernon in the opening period, and also got into a third period fight with Trail’s Powell Connor who is a Vernon native.

Sartell Minnesota native Keegan Karki took the loss in net for the Vipers, making 22 saves, while Logan Terness made 23 saves for the second-place Smokies who are 11 points ahead of the third-place Vipers.

Vernon next plays Sunday at home to the Salmon Arm Silverbacks at 2 p.m.
