Things Engraved shutting down

Jan 15, 2020 | 1:41 PM

It’s perhaps another sign of the crippling retail market. Things Engraved, a store known for its personalized gift creations, has announced it will be closing all its stores — including its Village Green Shopping Centre location.

A letter posted to the door over the weekend said the business was in default of its lease and owed nearly $4,238.33 in unpaid rent, operating costs, and property taxes to BentallGreenOak, the company that manages the mall.

It’s unclear how many employees are affected by the closure. In a statement, company CEO Shawn Brock said employees remain a priority during this trying time.

“With every day in operation at this point costing more money than we were making, time was of the essence in addressing this loss quickly so that we could ensure the availability of funds to meet our statutory obligations to our employees, notably pay in lieu requirements,” Brock said.

Customers with items left at the store are asked to contact customerservice@thingsengraved.ca with a description of the item and the store it was in. The company stated it will work with mall management and “do everything we can to retrieve the item for you.”

The Things Engraved store inside the Orchard Park Mall in Kelowna also closed its doors about a week and a half ago, according to mall staff.

The Kitchener Ont. company was in business for 38 years.
