Off-duty officer helps in arrest of robbery suspect

An Enderby man is facing 10 charges in connection with an armed robbery at a Salmon Arm business on New Year’s Day.

RCMP say a man wearing a balaclava on his face, and with a long barrelled gun, held up a liquor store on 11th Avenue NE around 8 p.m. Jan. 1, and allegedly pointed the gun at a customer before leaving in a vehicle with cash and cigarettes.

“No staff or customers were physically injured during the interaction,” Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey of the RCMP’s Southeast District said.

O’Donaghey said investigators were able to identify and arrest a suspect in the case, thanks in part to the observations made by independent witnesses at the scene

“One of our own officers was inside the store at the time of the alleged robbery. The RCMP officer was off-duty at the time, but managed to obtain valuable information about the suspect and suspect vehicle which assisted investigators in advancing the robbery investigation to an arrest being made that evening,” O’Donaghey said.

Anthony Robert Summers, 29, of Enderby has been charged with 10 offences, including commit robbery where a firearm is used, disguise face with intent to commit an offence, pointing a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and possession of stolen property under $5,000.

Summers appeared in Salmon Arm Provincial Court Jan. 7, and has been remanded in custody until his next court date Feb. 4.
