RCMP point finger at trucker for highway closure

Jan 3, 2020 | 2:07 PM

The avalanche and crash plagued TransCanada Highway near Revelstoke was subjected to yet another closure on Friday.

Members of the Integrated Road Safety Unit and Revelstoke RCMP responded to a motor vehicle crash before the noon hour, approximately five kilometres west of Revelstoke.

“A tractor trailer was passing other motorists in the designated westbound passing lane when it jackknifed, blocking both east and westbound lanes,” Cpl. Thomas Blakney of the Revelstoke detachment said. “Fortunately there were no injuries and no other vehicles damaged other than the tractor trailer.”

Police described road conditions at the time of the crash as compact snow with sleet.

Vehicles were stopped for about an hour before re-opening for single lane alternating traffic.

“The 53-year-old driver of the tractor trailer was issued a violation ticket for speed relative to conditions contrary to section, 144(1)(c) of the Motor Vehicle Act,” Blakney said. “Revelstoke RCMP want to remind motorists to adhere to the rules of the road and drive according to the conditions as further snowfall is expected in the area.”
