Original story

The Trans Canada highway is closed in both directions east of Revelstoke.

Revelstoke RCMP says in a news release officers were dispatched at 4:30 a.m. Friday to a two-vehicle crash at Albert Canyon about 40 kilometres east of Revelstoke.

Staff Sgt. Kurt Grabinsky says two large commercial vehicles hit head-on.

“Police arrived on scene and located two commercial tractor-trailers which had collided head-on, with both drivers being pinned inside the vehicles,” Grabinsky says. “Both required extrication by the Revelstoke Fire Rescue Service as well as transportation to the Queen Victoria Hospital in Revelstoke by BC Ambulance Service. Both drivers have potentially life-threatening injuries.”

Heavy snow has been falling all night in the area.

The highway is closed until officers can complete their investigation and remove the trucks from the road.

“The roadway will need to be cleared by the local highways maintenance contractor EMCON and approved safe for travel by the Ministry of Transportation,” Grabinsky says. “Drivers are suggested to consult with DriveBC where they can determine when the road is likely to (be) re-opened.”

Drive BC says the road could reopen at 2 p.m.
