Local product makes Canada West roster

Vernon resident Powell Connor has made the roster from Team Canada West for the World Junior A Challenge in Dawson Creek which starts Saturday in Dawson Creek.

Connor is a defenceman for the BCHL’s Trail Smoke Eaters, and is one of 11 BCHL’ers to make the team, including four Smoke Eaters.

Vernon Vipers defenceman Trey Taylor attended the team’s camp, but did not make the final roster.

The five-team event also incudes Canada East, Russia, Czeck Republic and the United States.

Team Canada West, coached by Joe Martin of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, opens against the USA Saturday.

TSN will broadcast the bronze and gold medal games on Dec. 15.

Here is the complete list of BCHL players to make Team Canada West:

Defencemen: Powell Connor – Trail Smoke Eaters, Xavier Henry – Chilliwack Chiefs.

Forwards: Brendan Budy – Langley Rivermen, Kent Johnson – Trail Smoke Eaters, Kyler Kovich – Nanaimo Clippers, Philippe Lapointe – Trail Smoke Eaters, Luke Mylymok – Salmon Arm Silverbacks, Owen Ozar – Trail Smoke Eaters, Nick Poisson – Prince George Spruce Kings, Massimo Rizzo – Coquitlam Express, Ethan Scardina – Nanaimo Clippers.
