Brittany Runs a Marathon – Showing December 9

Dec 4, 2019 | 7:20 AM

Starring Jillian Bell as Brittany Forgler, the Okanagan Screen Arts Society is showing “Brittany Runs A Marathon” on December 9th at the Vernon Towne Cinema.

Brittany is a hilarious, friendly young woman who grudgingly decides to make positive changes in her life after her doctor advises her to get healthy by giving up her partying lifestyle, which is starting to catch up with her, thereby forcing her to face reality for the first time. Her diagnosis of clinical obesity, her chronic unemployment and toxic relationships are taking its toll on this 27-year-old good time girl.

As Brittany is too broke for a gym membership she takes her neighbors’ advice to put on her running shoes and hit the pavement. She starts out by running just one block.

The next day she increases it to two blocks and then she runs her first mile. Inspired by her running success, she sets herself the lofty goal of running the New York City Marathon, one of the biggest running events in the country. This gives her a direction and heads her down the path to fitness and health, although she discovers that her biggest hurdle is getting over herself.

· Bell gives a poignant and piercingly real performance as this film takes us into the sharp twists and turns of the real-life experiences of first-time feature filmmaker Paul Downs Colaizzo’s roommate, Brittany O’Neill, who was his inspiration for this movie. The film is always honest on the topics of weight, wellness and self-worth as it delves into the struggles and strife of learning to love yourself.

· This movie exposes the emotional impact of how society treats people differently when your dress size is in the double digits, how the scars of bad relationships can intensify insecurity and how self-loathing can create a negative attitude that hurts others. This is much more than a simple comedy about fitness and weight loss. Brittany’s journey includes the healing and forgiveness it takes to really meet those goals, proving that anything is possible if you have faith in yourself.

· You may find yourself inspired to lace up those runners yourself and set some personal goals and make lifestyle changes. It may not be running a marathon, but definitely one step at a time will lead you in the direction that is right for you. Anyone up for a run????
