Armstrong eyes more work on Meighan Creek

Sep 13, 2019 | 6:30 AM

Still concerned about future flooding, the City of Armstrong is looking for provincial funding for more work on Meighan Creek.

Mayor Chris Pieper said the city has been considering an overflow bypass around the community that would hook directly into Deep Creek.

The creek overflowed two years in a row, in 2017 and 2018, causing tens of thousands of dollars in damages to businesses and homes.

“It’s just that two-week period in the spring that everything seems to hit Armstrong so this seems to be a very good solution,” said Pieper.

Pieper said the project has not gone to tender but staff believe it could cost at least $500,000.

“But when you look at the damage that (flooding) could do to the community, which it did in 2017 and 18, it’s a lot more than that.”

A report to city council on Monday stated: “The city completed dredging of Meighan Creek in 2019, which was a small component of the work recommended by Interior Dams. The major portion of the work identified was an overflow bypass of Meighan Creek, directly to Deep Creek, taking advantage of a timing difference in the arrival of
flood waters between the two systems to eliminate the overflow flood conditions on Meighan Creek.”

On Monday, council gave staff the go ahead to apply for funding through the Structural Flood Mitigation 2019 program.

The maximum eligible funding is $750,000.

Pieper said he’s relieved there was no flooding this year.

“Mother nature looked after us.”
