Big bucks for OKIB cultural centre, nature park

Sep 11, 2019 | 2:35 PM

The federal and provincial governments are handing over $4 million for construction of an Indigenous Cultural Centre and Nature Park in Lake Country.

The big funding announcement was made today in a joint press release from the District of Lake Country and the Okanagan Indian Band (OKIB) which are collaborating on the project.

The centre will celebrate OKIB culture, history and language and promote tourism to the region.

It will be constructed adjacent to the Okanagan Rail Trail.

“The centre will contribute to promoting tourism as well as further understanding of the traditional and continued land use of the Syilx Okanagan people,” the press release said. “A new storm water treatment wetland will also be incorporated into the design which will result in restoration and enhancement of the wetlands and grassland habitat.”

“The community of Lake Country is looking forward to this unique partnership with our neighbours [the] Okanagan Indian Band,” Lake Country Mayor James Baker said. “It is imperative for the entire community to preserve and showcase the culture of the OKIB and this community amenity will facilitate the opportunity to do so.”

“The Indigenous Cultural Centre will provide an opportunity for all people to learn about the Okanagan people and our traditions through art,” Chief of the Okanagan Indian Band Byron Louis said. “Through understanding, we can build quality relationships and become stronger together.”

The federal government is providing $1.6 million toward construction of the project and the B.C. government is handing over more than $1.3 million.
