Hundreds help club celebrate anniversary of facility

A tournament that fell on the one year anniversary of Vernon’s pickleball courts, was a “resounding success,” according to organizers.

The Bannister Honda ‘Put Your Paddle to the Medal’ sanctioned tournament was held August 23 – 25 at the Okanagan Wealth Advisors Pickleball Complex in Marshall Field.

“With over 300 registrants, and near perfect weather, the tournament was a resounding success,” Anne Longley said as a spokesperson for the club.

The tournament was comprised of two age groups: 16 to 59 and 60-plus, with women’s and men’s doubles, and mixed doubles, in various skill levels.

“The youngest competitor was 21-year-old Jordan Renwick from Kelowna and the oldest was 82-year-old Wally Herrmann from Vernon – both gold medal winners in their skill group and age level,” Longley said.

More than 100 Vernon Pickleball Association members volunteered during the three-day tournament in positions ranging from referees, line judges, score keeping and announcing.

There were door prizes and a 50/50 draw with proceeds going towards the ‘Light the Court’ fund.

Comments from competitors to spectators were all positive and enthusiastic.

“Most well run tournament I’ve played. Hats off and thank you to all involved,” Spencer Munro from Kamloops said.

Michael “Botts’ Botterill from West Kelowna echoed Munro.

“Had a blast at your new facility. Can’t wait to come back. Thanks for hosting us,” he said.

The complex, featuring 12 dedicated courts and two practice courts, held its grand opening last August.

It was funded by donations raised by the club, and a $300,000 grant from the Regional District of North Okanagan.

The association now operates and manages the courts in a lease agreement with the City of Vernon.
