Update: ‘Error’ impacting students across B.C. now fixed

Jul 31, 2019 | 2:11 PM

Update

B.C.’s Education Minister says final exam marks for Grade 12 students have now been fixed and he’s confident that students and their families can know those grades are correct.

Rob Fleming says an investigation discovered that human error caused the incident when provincial exam data was being manually transferred between systems.

The minister says staff have checked and updated the results for accuracy and those grades will be communicated directly to post-secondary institutes.

Fleming says he knows the situation has caused anxiety for students and he wants to assure them that it won’t have an impact on their admission to colleges and universities. (Canadian Press)

Original story

B.C.’s Ombudsperson is monitoring the Ministry of Education’s response to a province-wide Grade 12 exam tabulation error affecting students and families across the B.C.

“I am concerned about this error and the impact it may have on students across B.C.,” Jay Chalke, B.C.’s Ombudsperson said. “This is a very stressful time for students as they make future education plans. I urge the ministry to not only address the technical issue but to also identify and remedy any individual impacts. Students and parents should be proactively informed about what they can do if they believe they have been adversely affected.”

In a message posted by the ministry, students accessing their final exam marks via the ministry’s online transcript service were advised of an “anomaly” and assured that the ministry was working to identify and
resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

The ministry indicated it would review each exam result and ensure grades were accurately reflected on their transcript.

The ministry said the “anomaly” was found in the results posted for the English 12 exam and the exam written by the province’s French immersion students.

Results were due to be posted Monday but the transcripts website was taken offline within hours after concerns that some of the results did not accurately reflect students’ work.

B.C.’s Ombudsperson has jurisdiction over all B.C. school boards and districts, universities, colleges and the Ministries of Education and Advanced Education.
