No parking on Brooks Lane

Jul 31, 2019 | 12:03 PM

Drivers parking on Brooks Lane in Vernon will be out of luck. City staff are installing no parking signs that would prohibit parking on both sides of the street.

The issue arose after a public hearing on June 24, 2019. City staff investigated the parking issues and noted that the street is too narrow at just six meters to accommodate parking on both sides.

The city aims to have all of the no parking signs in place by the end of August.

But at Monday’s council meeting Scott Anderson wasn’t sure putting up no parking signs was the answer.

“We’ve got a parking problem there but is the answer to really say no parking? Clearly there are cars that need parking spots,” Anderson said.

“Really the answer seems to me to widen the road,” Anderson added.

One no parking sign was already visible when VernonMatters visited Brooks Lane on Tuesday, and four vehicles and a boat were spotted parking on the road.

City staff maintained that the parking woes are only temporary and primarily consist of construction workers working on nearby projects.

“With my conversations with the residents it’s just a temporary problem and typically there’s not that parking demand there,” said Amanda Watson, transportation manager for the city of Vernon.

Coun. Anderson then questioned staff about parking usage after finding a boat trailer parked on the street when he went to visit the site.

“When I was there it was mainly boats and I don’t think that’s the case with construction workers,” he said.

Coun. Kari Gares noted that the marina is close by and putting up signs may encourage people hauling boats to park at the marina.

She also suggested turning the road into a one-way street, but staff cautioned that it could lead to an increase in speed.

“The challenge with one way streets is that it does increase vehicle speeds,” Watson said.

Council has directed staff to look into the possibility of turning Brooks Lane into a one-way street. A report will be brought back to council at a later date.
