Police urge motorists to drive to conditions after serious crashes on Trans-Canada

Revelstoke RCMP are urging motorists to drive to conditions and obey speed signs following two serious crashes on Highway 1 in less than 24 hours.

On Thursday, police released a dramatic photo of a crash involving a single vehicle semi-tractor trailer that slammed into the side of a rocky hillside early this morning, leaving the highway closed in both directions for three hours.

Shortly before 5 a.m., RCMP officers were called out to the crash site approximately 33 kilometers east of Revelstoke on the Trans-Canada Highway.

They found a westbound semi-tractor trailer unit hauling equipment had jack-knifed and blocked both lanes, with the cab hitting the hillside.

The driver and his passenger, both from B.C., were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

No other vehicles were involved.

Police say the road was wet from heavy rain but with clear visibility.

Not many more hours before that, officers were in the same area investigating a separate serious crash.

“Coincidently this crash occurred in the same area as yesterday’s fatality which claimed the life of an adult male from Alberta,” Cpl. Thomas Blakeney of Revelstoke RCMP said. “I would like to remind motorists of the recommended speed sign of 80 km/h posted for westbound motorists, prior to the curves, in this area and to obey the rules of the road and drive relative to the conditions.”

Wednesday’s crash in rainy weather closed the highway for over five hours after a dump truck collided with a number of vehicles before the driver was ejected from the vehicle and was killed.
