Jul 11, 2019 | 5:30 AM

Update:

The Generation Program Alzheimer’s disease prevention studies planned by Okanagan Clinical Trials (OCT) in Kelowna has been cancelled.

“After an assessment of unblinded data during a regular pre-planned review, the Generation Program sponsors made the decision to discontinue investigation of the BACE1 inhibitor CNP520 (umibecestat).

“The sponsors concluded that the potential benefit for participants in the studies did not outweigh the risk,” said a release from OCT sned to Vernon Matters.

Original story:

Okanagan Clinical Trials is looking for people to take part in a study to help prevent or delay Alzheimer’s disease.

The research team, headed by Dr. Paul Latimer, is looking for individuals 60 to 75 years old, with or without family history of Alzheimer’s who have not been diagnosed with any memory impairment.

“A simple cheek swab can tell if a person has the genetic makeup to take part in the study and Dr. Latimer and his team are making it easy. A community swabbing event will be held at Okanagan Clinical Trials, 204-1353 Ellis Street, Kelowna from Monday July 15 to Wednesday July 17, 2019 during regular business hours from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.,” said a news release from Okanagan Clinical Trials.

“Canadians who took part in a recent international survey were among the 91% of respondents who believe the solution to tackling Alzheimer’s disease lies in medical research but 75% of respondents said they have no idea how to get involved. This is where you come in,” added the news release.
