MMA makes return to Vernon

Jul 11, 2019 | 1:53 PM

Mixed martial arts fights will make a return to Vernon this summer.

City council recently lifted a ban on MMA events in March that was in effect since 2014.

Loria Group Entertainment, Mahood MMA and Untity MMA have announced a 22-fight card at the Vernon Curling Rink on August 24 in a B.C. Combative Sports Commission sanctioned event.

It will feature a 30-foot octagon, food and beverage service, and general admission as well as VIP tables.

“Sponsored by Sir Winston’s Pub and Liquor Store, Ladies World Health and Fitness and World Health and Fitness, and Status Nightclub, ‘Unbanned’ will showcase the talent of seven local athletes fighting out of Vernon’s Unity MMA gym as well as athletes from Kelowna and Kamloops,” a news release sent to Vernon Matters said.

At a press conference this afternoon, organizers Raja Kler and Saverio Loria said that there is a lot riding on this event.

They said they are dotting all the “I”‘s and crossing all the “t”‘s to make sure that the event meets the athletic commissioner’s strict standards.

“It’s got to be done perfect so that’s why we are going full out on it,” said Loria.

Some of the regulations set forth by the B.C Athletic Commissioner, include licencing and competitor requirements, along with rules surrounding safety.

One of the rules stipulates that at least two ring-side doctors are present during the event.

If violations are found, it could lead to a licence suspension and the end of future events by the promoter.

A full overview of the safety and licencing requirements can be found here.

A positive event for the community

After a 10 year hiatus, and a five year bylaw prohibiting the sport, the organizers believe it will be a positive event for the city.

“I’m absolutely excited to be showcasing Vernon’s skilled and talented fighters,” said Kler, owner of Unity MMA.

At least seven fighters from Vernon will be competing at the event, including local fighter Kenny Pope.

“We’ve been having to travel all the time and when you include things like weight cuts into fights and stuff like that when you travel, it’s very difficult.” Kler said.

“And then also no one is cheering them, and now they get to compete at their own hometown and get cheered, so I think that’s fun. It will be a little change,” he added.

People of all ages are allowed to watch the athletes.
