Council eyes 2020 tax increase

Jun 20, 2019 | 7:30 PM

The City of Vernon might be dipping into taxpayers’ pockets a little bit more next year.

City council has agreed to consider a 2020 property tax revenue increase of roughly two per cent.

According to city staff, an increase of 2.38 per cent is necessary just to maintain the current levels of service and to keep up with rising costs.

“Asphalt costs are going up very fast, concrete costs are going up very fast, fuel costs at our fleet are going up very fast, so there are some areas, that are either stable or they are going to have a modest increase , and there are a number of areas that are going up well above two per cent.” said Will Pearce, chief administrative officer for the City of Vernon.

Council also expressed support for renewing a 1.9 per cent infrastructure levy for the eighth year.

Council held a special council meeting at the Lakers Club House where they discussed the strategic plan (Tiffany Goodwein/ Vernon Matters Staff)

The purpose of the levy, according to Pearce, is to generate $12 million a year over 10 years to reinvest into infrastructure and to avoid an infrastructure deficit.

Council’s approval Thursday allows city staff to build a budget for next year with the revenue increases in mind.

The numbers will be brought before city council during budget deliberations later this year.
