Update: Shots fired in Vernon neighborhood

May 16, 2019 | 1:30 PM

1:30 p.m. update

A 26 year old Kelowna man is in custody in connection with an incident where shots were fired near a residence in Vernon.

Police say they received numerous calls from the public after gunshots were heard in the 3000 block of 41st Avenue Wednesday night

“At approximately 9 p.m., multiple police officers from the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP descended on the area in response and learned that vehicles associated to the incident had fled the scene prior to police arrival,” says Cpl. Tania Finn.

“A detailed description of one of the suspect vehicles was provided to police officers in the surrounding communities. A short time later, the vehicle was located on Highway 97 by a police officer patrolling in Spallumcheen. Given there were firearms involved in this incident, police initiated a high risk stop with the occupants of the suspect vehicle,” says Finn.

Finn says the two people in the vehicle complied with the police officer’s direction and were quickly taken into custody without further incident.

Police arrested a 20 year old woman from Vernon who was later released without charge and a 26 year old male from Kelowna who remains in custody.

“Police have not had any reports of injuries as a result of the shots fired complaint; however, the investigation continues as police remain on scene,” adds Finn.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or leaving a tip online at www.nokscrimestoppers.com.

Several police cars have surrounded a home on 41 Avenue.

Neighbors in the area say they heard roughly eight to 10 loud bangs at around 9 p.m. on Wednesday

“We were just relaxing for the evening and then we heard the very loud pop, pop, pop, pop, and then a really loud SUV, you could hear the engine heading down towards 32 Street and then the next thing you know we had a lot of police presence,” said one neighbor who requested to remain anonymous.

Another person nearby also said he heard several loud bangs.

“I just work across the street at Canada’s Best Value and I was just sitting there and then I heard something like there was gunshots right, but I thought maybe some crackers or something else but then we figured it out there are lots of cops over here,” he said.

According to neighbors, the home that police are surrounding is occupied by young adults.

41 Avenue and 31 Street remain blocked as police continue to investigate.

It is unknown if there are any injuries.

Another incident ?

Cameron Klim tells Beach Radio News that he saw three cops with their guns drawn on Highway 97 between Armstrong and Vernon at approximately 9:45 p.m.

“I was driving by and three cops were pulled up behind in a triangle formation,” said Klim.

He said the cops were pointing at a male suspect who appeared to be driving a white BMW E46 convertible.

The man was on his knees with his hands up, according to Klim.

It is unclear if this incident is related to the incident on 41 Avenue.

We have reached out to the RCMP for more information.
