Homeless shelter seeing lots of use since opening

Vernon’s newest homeless shelter is getting a lot of use.

Randene Wejr Co- Director of Turning Points Collaborative says the shelter has been full nearly every single day since opening at the end of March.

” My latest understanding is that we’ve been full pretty much since the day we opened,” said Wejr.

The facility has 46 beds and is open to men and women who are 19 or older.

The shelter allows residents to come and go as long as a bed is available.

Wejr says she expects a slight dip in use now that the weather is getting warmer but she is still expects the shelter to be fairly full.

” We do expect a little less demand on the shelter but we have had wait lists so I’m assuming we’ll still be full,” said Wejr.

Clients at the shelter receive access to life skills training, employment services, counseling, 12 -step programs and health and legal services through a community network.

The facility also offers a place for guests to use drugs and get access to harm reduction supplies.

” It’s not supervised, but we do provide a space and clean reduction supplies, so the person can tell a staff member so that we can go and check and make sure that they are okay and that they have not overdosed,” said Wejr.

The facility is funded by B.C Housing.
