Club Issues Warning About Door To Door Scam

A Vernon area service club is warning residents to be wary if a person knocks on their door soliciting funds on behalf of Silver Star Rotary.

Club president Gillian Canniff has emailed local media, wanting to alert residents about an individual (or individuals) going door to door in the Vernon area, seeking money.

“The person is apparently a clean cut male who is carrying a clipboard and asking for funds on behalf of Silver Star Rotary,” says Canniff.  “We heard about this last month around March 27th but without much detail.  The person appears to be back at it again and was back going door to door again on Sunday April 28th.  The latest story is that it is to help ‘a woman who has a rare spinal condition,'” says Canniff.

Canniff wants people to know that Silver Star Rotary Club does not solicit funds door to door, nor does it generally do projects for one person.

“Rotary tries to sponsor projects that are of some benefit to our community or the international community with the overall mission to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.”

Canniff, who is a lawyer, says if a person does come to your door seeking funds in this manner, you should simply say no.

“If they could then immediately contact the non-emergency phone line for the RCMP 250-545-7171 and take down the license plate number or any other identifying characteristics (keep video surveillance if they have it) to provide to the police, that would be helpful.

Canniff says RCMP have started a file, but they have very limited information at this point.

“If individuals who are being solicited contact the RCMP right away, and an RCMP members is available, they will go to the neighbourhood and try to apprehend the individual.”
