Update: Standoff Ends With Arrest

A standoff has come to an end in a Kelowna neighborhood with a man taken into custody by police.

A 39 year old Kelowna man was apprehended at, or near, a home on Monashee Place in the Dilworth area, where neighbors had reported a possible break and enter in progress around 5 a.m.

“Just a short time ago, at approximately 10:35 a.m., the individual was apprehended by RCMP officers at the scene,” says RCMP Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey. “He was taken into police custody with the support of the South East District Emergency Response Team and the Kelowna RCMP Police Dog Services section.”

Officers set up containment around the house after learning the man inside was distraught and possibly armed.

Residents from homes in the immediate area were evacuated as a precaution, but should be allowed home soon.

The corporal says the suspect faces a number of potential criminal charges.

RCMP say an unfolding police incident has been contained to a single residence in Kelowna as officers continue their efforts to negotiate with a distraught man inside a home.

Officers were called to a residence just before 5 this morning in the 900 block of Monashee Place after neighbours reported a possible break and enter in progress.

Police responded to the home where, once on scene, they found what they believed to be evidence of forcible entry inside.

“Front line RCMP officers were in the process of entering the home, when they suddenly had to retreat to a tactical position and set up containment,” says Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey of the Kelowna RCMP. “Police have reason to believe that a distraught male, who is possibly armed remains alone inside his home.”

“As a precautionary measure, front line RCMP officers have evacuated residents from their homes in the immediate area to ensure their personal safety,” adds Cpl. O’Donaghey.

RCMP are asking media and social media users to not publicize the physical location of officers, be it via verbal descriptor or photographs and or videos.

The Kelowna RCMP, supported by the RCMP Southeast District Emergency Response Team are continuing efforts to make contact and negotiate with the man, while BC Emergency Health Services remains on standby near the scene.
