Teacher absenteeism down in school district

Apr 9, 2019 | 5:14 PM

Absenteeism for teachers and support staff at School District 22 appears to have gone down from previous years.

“A couple of years ago, and as years have gone by, we have actually been in the hole in the absenteeism costs,” said Assistant Superintendent Adrian Johnson at Wednesday’s board meeting.

Sick leave, maternity leave, and paternity leave are some of the leaves that fall under the absenteeism category.

But despite the reduction, the district says they still have “an unusual amount of teachers on long-term sick” and that the numbers could change in the next three months since school is still in session

Officials with the school district were unable to specify why they have an unusual amount of teachers on long- term sick leave.

Last year the district spent  $2.75 million on sick leave costs, which is down from 2017 when they spent $2.95 million dollars.
