Geese control squashed by city council

The possibility of hiring another person to help with geese control in city parks and beaches is no more.

Vernon City Council voted to squash the idea at their council meeting on Monday.

The motion was put forward by Councillor Dalvir Nahal who suggested the city look into adding an extra person in the afternoons.

In a report issued to council, city staff said that an extra person in the afternoons would “have minimal value” because people are using the parks and beaches and scaring the geese on their own.

Staff also said that hiring an extra person would cost the city an extra $13,230.

At Monday’s meeting, many agreed that while the idea may not be effective, another solution needs to come the table to control the geese population.

“It may not be a good idea to do this but something needs to happen to the geese,” said Coun. Scott Anderson.

Kendra Kryszak, manager of Parks and Public Spaces, said the the city is reviewing other methods of controlling the geese including some more aggressive tactics used by communities on the coast that control geese through harvesting.

The city currently sub contracts a service to controls the geese in the morning by using scare tactics.
