City Wants Discussion on OD Prevention Site

Interior Health’s plan for an overdose prevention site in Vernon will get more discussion at City council today.

The health agency is seeking interest from potential contractors to run the facility, with a targeted opening sometime this summer.

Several councillors and the Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce have concerns about where it would be, and if a facility like that is even needed.

City staff is recommending the proponent meet with businesses and residents adjacent to the location, and clearly outline what is planned.

“Not simply to advise or notify the property owners (businesses and residents), but to explain the service, hours, controls, intent, value to the greater community and the continuum of health care services. And to listen to any concerns, comments of the property owners,” says City Administrator Will Pearce in a report to council.

“Those responding to the Request for Proposals will be asked how a select location is appropriate for the needs of the target population (clients at a high risk of an opioid overdose) and demonstrate engagement with impacted stakeholders.

“In addition, proponents are asked to identify the security and safety components of their proposed site, other nearby services and organizations, and a detailed Risk Management Plan,” says Interior Health Medical Health Officer Dr. Karin Goodison in a letter to the City.
