Coldstream resident concerned about rail trail proposal

A Coldstream resident says she would like to see more safety measures in place for residents and pedestrians if proposed plans for the Okanagan Rail Trail are put in place in her neighborhood.

” Yesterday I was almost hit by a car that came out of the parking for the rail trail and I was trying to go up Kick Willie off West Kal, I had the right of way, ” said resident Judy Hughes.

” That stop sign is ignored on a regular basis, and I think it is a liability waiting to happen.” she said.

A paved 50 stall parking lot is planned for the area, and that’s in addition to the 40 parking spaces available at the Kalamalka Country Club.

Hughes says that parking spaces in the area currently turn over every one to three hours on busy days.

“That’s a lot of demand on a residential area,” she said.

She claims that she has counted 65 and 67 cars the past two Sundays in the proposed parking lot and that’s adding a lot of congestion to an area that she has lived in for 25 years .

” We have U-turns happening all the time, we have school buses that go down and drop off students, and turn around in that area , we have Predator Ridge on their website advertising two tours a day dropping in front of the porta potties double parked,” said Hughes.

She asked to speak to the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee on Wednesday and urged them to consider a traffic impact study for the neighborhood.

“It would yes give us future use, it would give us links to other community parking, it would make sure that we are safe, that we are risk managed and that we are not liable should an accident happen at that location,” she told the committee.

The Regional District of the North Okanagan says they are in discussions with the District of Coldstrean about the possibility of doing a traffic impact study in the area.

The district also says that they will start paving the parking lot once the purchase of mile 88 is finalized.
