City Pitches “Higher Than Normal” Tax Hike

Enderby’s mayor says council’s proposed budget hike is higher than normal, but it will keep the city moving forward.

“It’s a little higher than our history with this council, but we’ve got a few extra projects happening, so we figured we have to just keep going and deal with the infrastructure deficit we have,” Greg McCune tells Beach Radio News.

Council is targeting a 3.8% increase which works out to $78 for the average homeowner, with a home assessed at $308,000.

Public input will be gathered at council’s next meeting April 15th.

McCune says the increase is needed for operational increases, and to keep up with infrastructure needs.

The mayor says says part of the hike is to upgrade Reservoir Drive for 1.3 million dollars.

“It’s not a highly busy road car-wise, but everything that happens underneath the road brings everything off the knoll down into town, so the sewer, storm drainage and whatever. And at the time it was done, it wasn’t done as great as it could have been so we’ve got bit of history we have to clean up,” adds McCune.

The increase would also provide more funding for MSP fees, staffing costs, and to compensate council members for the loss of a previous federal tax exemption.

“Everything just adds up,” concludes the mayor, who says council has tried to keep past tax increases to cost of living, averaging about 2%.
