Changes coming to protect deer

 Changes are coming to parts of the Grey Canal Trail, in an effort to help keep deer safe.

The Regional District of the North Okanagan says they received several reports of deer getting caught in the barbed wire fence.

The incidents occurred in the fall and the district says the barbed wire has since been removed.

“In the fall, the RDNO received several reports of deer being caught in the fencing on the Rail Trail due to the high barbwire along the Gray Canal Trail. We removed the barb wire immediately and have not received any more reports,” said Keith Pinkoski, Manager of Parks, RDNO.

“We will be adding horizontal bars to some sections of the trail which will give the deer an easy route out,” he added.

The horizontal bars will be installed once the property owners are notified.

Deer getting caught in fences has struck a nerve of concern lately . One woman posted this photo on social media of a fence that appears to have a hole in it because of a deer.

 

“ Sad when Orchards put up high fences with the intention of keeping deer and other animals out, but are unsuccessful and the deer still are able to jump from high ground to low ground over the fences. They are either severely maimed or killed by getting caught in the fences with no food or water for days trapped in the enclosure,“ she wrote.
