We Are The Multicultural Champions

The North Okanagan’s 2019 Multicultural Community Champions have been honoured.

The program celebrates the contributions of local residents, and the roles multiculturalism and diversity have in strengthening the community.

This year’s ten champions, who went through a nomination process, were honoured at an event at Okanagan College’s Vernon campus Saturday.

They are Laura Hockman, Jas Khatra, Sheldon Louis, Marjorie Mackie, Toshie Okada, Umang Patel, Monika Schrott, Amanda Shatzko, Rosalinda Smelser, and Rachael Zubick.

The recipients were introduced by Annette Sharkey, Executive Director of the Social Planning Council, and acknowledged by Eric Foster, MLA Vernon-Monashee, for their commitment to supporting culture and diversity in the community.

Sharkey says the individuals contribute in many ways through sharing their culture, volunteerism, and in their work.

“Criteria for the nominees are that they be connected to a diverse cultural background, contribute back to our community through entrepreneurship, career, stewardship, mentorship or volunteerism, and are willing to share their cultural story publicly,” says Sharkey.
