Protect Your Mail From Thieves

Protect Your Mail From Thieves

Mar 21, 2019 | 4:30 PM

This is the time of year to pay particular attention to your mail.

Police say mail theft tends to increase during tax season, as thieves target mail boxes to steal personal information and money from confidential documents.

Mounties have received reports of mail boxes being damaged and mail going missing in outlying areas.

“With tax season upon us, we tend to see an increase in mail theft, just as we do during the holiday season,” says Cst. Kelly Brett of the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP. “Over the past few months, officers have received reports of Canada Post super boxes being damaged and possible mail that has gone missing in some of the more rural areas. We want to remind everyone to collect their mail daily and if you will be away for an extended period of time, have your mail collected by a friend or family member or put your mail on hold with Canada Post.”

There is also security concerns with having online shopping packages delivered to your front door.

“If you are not home during the day, have the parcel shipped to your work address or to a post office location,” says Brett.

Recycled paper can also be a concern.

“Shred documents that contain personal financial information, such as statements and credit card offers. Watch for and attend your local community shred days within your area.”

RCMP encourage residents to report any suspicious activity in your area to police.
