Update : School District 22 seeking public consultation on school buses

A survey is in the works for parents of students in the Vernon School District who are impacted by the bus policy changes.

The survey was recommended by the Transportation Review Committee who says it’s important to get feedback on the proposed changes.

The changes include bus stop distance changes, fees for riders, and the elimination of routes all together.

The district says the survey is expected to come out today and they are advising parents to check the website for copies of the survey.

” I really hope a lot of people take part in this survey, we don’t want to make a decision until we talk to as many people,” said School Trustee Mark Olsen.

At Wednesday’s school board meeting, some parents and teachers expressed concern that the board is not giving them enough time to complete the survey and that the board won’t receive enough data to make a decision that accurately reflects the number of issues.

” Given that the next two weeks are spring break and we don’t return to school by the second of April, that’s a short window. Many families might not even be available to sit down and craft a response to the survey questions, ” said Dave Mackenzie.

Parents have until April 15 to fill out the survey.

Board members need to make a decision by June 30, 2019 to meet the budget deadline established by the Ministry of Education.

The district admits that ridership has dropped by 1000 users since they began implementing some of these changes, including charging for courtesy riders in September.
