Kids demand climate change action

Some Vernon kids are cutting class today to demand climate change accountability from governments and corporations.

Organizer Kieran Grandbois from W. L Seaton Secondary School says over 43 students from throughout the city are participating.

” Our goal today here is to encourage corporations and governments to be accountable for their climate emissions and essentially to ensure that we all have a future,” he said.

He adds that interest from adults and kids has grown since the group started.

” We do have a large movement considering it is an activist movement and we are definitely growing. In recent times we have actually started to take a look at the members that we have and we see sort of steady growth, which is great and we are hoping to see larger numbers in the future still.”

The protest even drew interest from some local leaders who stopped by to show their support.

” I’m delighted to be here at a youth-led rally to support the students because it’s their voices that we really need to hear, ” said Cindy Derkaz, Federal Liberal Candidate for the North Okanagan Shuswap.

The next Earth Strike rally is slated for April 27, 2019 at the courthouse.
