Update: Stolen Dog Found and Returned

UPDATE March 13

It is a happy ending to a dog napping case in Kelowna.

Kelowna RCMP say Atlas, an 18 month old Golden Retriever, who was taken from a yard on March 9th, is now back with his owner.

“Over the past few days Kelowna RCMP have received numerous tips from the public and continued to follow up on a number of potential leads,” says Cst. Lesley Smith, Kelowna RCMP “While working closely with the complainant, our members were able to track down Atlas’ location and he was returned to his owner just after 4pm this afternoon.”

The dog was reportedly found in Penticton.

“This investigation remains ongoing, however locating and returning Atlas to his Kelowna home was our first priority and no further updates will be provided at this time,” says Smith.

Video shows female suspect approach the fenced property and interact with the dog. After a few moments the dog emerges from behind the fence and both run across the street towards the camera before disappearing out of sight behind a tall fence.

RCMP in Kelowna are investigating the apparent theft of an 18-month-old Golden Retriever, taken Saturday evening from a fenced yard in Kelowna’s Mission area.

“On March 9, 2019 at 7:47 pm, RCMP received a report of a theft of dog from the fenced yard of residence located in the 2400 block of Taylor Crescent in Kelowna. Police were told that at approximately 7:34 pm, the female suspect seemingly opened a gate to the property and called the Golden Retriever out of the yard. The dog named Atlas then followed the woman, who ran on foot towards Birch Avenue,” says Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

The female suspect has been described to investigators as Caucasian, with blonde hair, seen wearing a dark coloured jacket, a dark pair of pants and a white toque at the time of the alleged theft. She was reportedly associated to a white sports utility vehicle or SUV.

“RCMP are taking the matter seriously,” says O’Donaghey. “Police have followed up on some investigative leads, as they continue their efforts to identify the woman in the video and ultimately locate Atlas.”

“At this time there are some indications that the theft may have been targeted, however police will continue to treat the incident as random until that can be confirmed,” says Cpl. O’Donaghey. “At this time there are no other similar reports that we are aware of.”
