Council approves demolition of Kin Race Track

It’s officially the end of an era for the Kin Race Track.

City council voted to direct staff to begin the demolition and removal of the site on Monday.

According to a report compiled by staff, the race track is a public safety issue with failing structures, left over debris and homeless camps popping up.

“I’ve been in those stalls on a number of occasions. I haven’t camped there myself but I’ve visited many camps over the years and it is quite a safety concern,” said Coun. Kelly Fehr.

“It’s a matter of time before it collapses,” he said.

Coun. Brian Quiring said he is in support of the demolition but wondered if the city could get more value for their money by waiting to do the demolition.

“It would be significantly less expensive to do the demolition if it was coupled with another project in my opinion.”

He also said that the structures might be advantageous to reuse, if the city is looking to build another structure.

All structures including the horse barns, cement foundations, observation towers and fencing are slated for removal.

The city says the Kin Race Track will then be turned into a greenfield site.

Funds for the demolition totaling $560,000 will come out of an insurance deductible reserve fund following the fire that destroyed the grandstands at the track in 2014.
