Hwy 97 could open by next week

Hwy 97 near Summerland could be open soon

Feb 19, 2019 | 3:18 PM

The B.C Ministry of Transportation says Highway 97 between Summerland and Peachland could soon be open to traffic.

The highway has been closed for over two weeks after a rock slide sent rocks and debris onto the roadway.

In an update today, the Ministry says there has been no movement detected at the slide site for the past five days . The stability of the slope has helped crews progress on breaking down rock and working on clean up.

The Ministry says they are hoping to have the highway reopened sometime next week.

In the meantime, crews are continuing to clean up the slide and monitor movement.

Drivers are being detoured through Callan Road . The speed limit is 30 km/ hr and commercial vehicles are only allowed to detour between midnight and 5 a.m.
