Affordable housing project breaks ground in Vernon

The federal government announced Thursday that it will be shelling out $2.27 million dollars to help build an affordable rental complex in Vernon.

The 38 unit building, called Thunderbird Manor will be located on 5545 27th Avenue.

The four-story building is built in partnership with the Vernon Native Housing Society and B.C Housing.

The complex will help house seniors, individuals with accessibility issues, and aboriginal families.

Adam Vaughan, Parliamentary Secretary to the Federal Minister of Families, Children and Development was on hand to make the announcement.

“When we open seniors housing for me it is the most important component of the National Housing Strategy by making sure that the end of that journey is safe, and is provided for and is as smart as possible,” said Vaughan.

Twenty of the 38 units will be deemed “affordable” with rental rates at 80% of the medium market rental rates in the area.

The project is expected to be completed by summer 2020.
