Council candidates slapped with fines by Elections B.C

Two candidates for council in the North Okanagan have been slapped with fees from Elections B.C.

Sam Zaharia of Vernon and Jo McDermott of Salmon Arm have each been handed a $500.00 fee for failing to submit disclosure statements.

The statements provide details as to how much money was spent during their campaign and what individuals and organizations contributed to their campaign finances.

The disclosure statements also show how the money was spent.

According to Elections BC, the documents were supposed to be filed within 90 days after General Voting Day.

Any candidates who submit paperwork late gets hit with a $500 fee and those who don’t submit at all can face several penalties according to Elections B.C.

“In the event that a candidate does not file by the late filing deadline, the Act establishes penalties for failure to disclose. They include ceasing to hold office (if the candidate was elected), disqualification from running for office in the next general local election, a fine of up to $10,000 and/or imprisonment for up to two years,” explained Elections B.C Communications Director Rebecca Penz in an email to Beach Radio News.

Candidates now have until Feb. 19 2019, to pay the fee and submit the disclosure statements.

Failure to file is an offense under the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act.
