Needle Cleanup Program Before Council

Needle Cleanup Program Before Council

Feb 11, 2019 | 9:32 AM

Discarded needles in the downtown were identified as a problem by the Activate Safety Taskforce and now something may be done about it.

City council is being asked to endorse a pilot project called ‘Folks on Spokes’ that would allow for a daily cleanup of needle hot spots in the community by a team of peers working through the Community Safety Office.

A Monday-to-Friday hotline to report discarded needles would be set up for call-out requests.

There would also be a weekly ‘deep clean’ in downtown alleys and at Polson Park.

Council has already set aside $33,000 for the program.

This includes a $100 stipend for the daily cleanup/on call program to be shared between three to four peers.

If council endorses the program, a report on the pilot project would be made next October.
