A man is dead after being shot early this morning and North Okanagan RCMP believe it is linked to a targeted break and enter that turned violent overnight in Lavington.

Police are currently on scene at a number of locations and state another man is in custody.

Just before 1 a.m., RCMP were called to a break and enter in progress at a residential home located in the 9800 block of Park Lane in Lavington.

It was reported there were shots fired resulting in one occupant of the home sustaining non-life threatening injuries.

About a half hour after the break and enter, officers were called to the Village Green Hotel on the 4800 block of 27th Street in Vernon over a report of a man who had been shot and injured.

Police say the man has since died as a result of these injuries.

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP officers have currently secured and are investigating multiple crime scenes and believe that the two incidents may be related at this time, says RCMP Const. Kelly Brett. The investigation remains in its early stages, as police continue to examine the scenes for physical evidence and canvass the areas for witnesses.

ORIGINAL STORY:
The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP and the Southeast district major crimes unit are investigating an incident by the Village Green Hotel.

The Coroner is also on site, and a white van remains wrapped up in a tent.
Hotel guests tell Beach Radio News the tactical squad, police dogs and several police vehicles have been surrounding the area since early this morning .

” It was about quarter to seven when we heard a flash bang,” said hotel guest  Rae Schan who also said that police had large guns drawn.
Juko Boersma was staying on the second floor of the hotel,  next door to the incident.
” I gave the police a statement of what I heard and it wasn’t all that much because it was a lot of muffling sounds. I thought somebody might of been on drugs or alcohol.”
He said he had to be evacuated just before 3 a.m. this morning.
“We had to leave , the whole floor had to leave , and then they provided us with a hotel room right over there,” he said.
The RCMP is expected to provide an update within the hour.
