Enderby Prepared For Marijuana

Enderby Prepared For Marijuana

The city of Enderby is waiting for its first application for a cannabis store.

Mayor Greg McCune feels the city is squared away well with its bylaws covering cannabis.

“You know, we’re getting a few people come through, do the inquiry, which we want. The way the process works, once it’s to the province, if we’re not in favour of it they’re not going to let it go through. So, the province and ourselves have to be communicating.”

McCune says he doesn’t have a problem telling a potential retailer in advance the city wouldn’t support a bid it felt didn’t fit.

The city hasn’t set a limit on how many stores would be  acceptable.

“No we haven’t. Our stuff was just based around location. As long as it doesn’t affect the neighbourhood  they’re free to make the application and move forward from there.”

He doesn’t think the government would want to open its own store in Enderby

“I think we’re probably more likely to see like something corporate. I know Shoppers Drug Mart for example has an application in.”

McCune says an independent model seems to be a better fit for the community.

Retailers are limited in scope where they can set up including being nowhere near a school, pre-school, parks, beaches
