VegPro Easing Into Operations

About 80 people are currently working at the new VegPro facility on Ricardo Road in Coldstream.

They’ve involved in harvesting and packaging salad products for sale at stores like Wal Mart under the Fresh Attitude brand.

Jon Blais, Western Region Director for the Quebec-based VegPro International says they are not up to full speed yet.

“It’s the early stage of production, so where we test our equipment, make sure everything works fine, make sure our product is top quality for the client, and then in the next few weeks, you should start to see them on the shelves,” Blais tells Beach Radio News

Blais says they are always looking for more workers, adding by the end of the year they expect to have up to 120 employees.

He says given it’s their first season here, the produce is being tested for its quality, and they’re not sure what impact the summer smoke will have.

“It maybe just slowing (the growing) because if we don’t get as much heat and its trapped humidity, it changes the growth pattern of the product because of the smoke. Or I should say, it could potentially,” says Blais.

VegPro bought 700 acres from the Coldstream Ranch last year for its 60 million dollar operation.
